Sony is planning to bring PlayStation games to your mobile phones

Highlights:

  • Sony is planning to bring PlayStation games to your mobile phones.
  • The company intentionally or unintentionally hinted that they are planning to expand to the mobile universe.
  • The company already has a few games and apps available for mobile users.

Sony is working on a new way to provide access to PS games. Sony is hiring an executive at PlayStation Studios that would focus on bringing PlayStation’s “most popular franchises” to mobile. While the listing unsurprisingly doesn’t mention titles or timeframes, the new Head of Mobile would develop a three- to five-year strategy.

No one can ever deny Sony’s position in the console market. The game developer established itself as a pillar of game consoles ever since the launch of the PlayStation.

The job description stated:

“Do you want to lead the development and strategy of mobile gaming and help shape the future of gaming for a world-class studio? As Head of Mobile, you will own and develop the mobile game’s strategy for PlayStation Studios and help build a foundation for future growth opportunities.

The company already has a few games and apps available for mobile users, including Run Sackboy! Run!, Uncharted: Fortune Hunter, God of War | Mimir’s Vision AR app, as well as some PlayStation 4 PlayLink titles, including Supermassive’s Hidden Agenda and Flavourworks’ Erica.

It could bring the PlayStation brand to a much wider audience and, of course, reap profits from in-app purchases. Titles like FortnitePUBG, and Roblox owe a large amount of their success to mobile gamers. The challenge, of course, is executing that strategy. The games themselves have to adapt to mobile without losing what makes them special on your console.

This means that you may soon be able to enjoy PlayStation games on your smartphones. This will be an interesting development for the gaming industry as mobile gaming has come of age in the past few years and is giving tough competition to consoles.

Sony won’t be the first company to do so. The biggest example of the same is Activision-Blizzard which is planning to bring several of its popular games to the mobile platforms, largely inspired by the success of Call of Duty: Mobile.
