Some Android apps including Gmail crash today, Google working on a fix

Highlights:

  • Important apps such as Gmail and Google Pay are among the apps crashing on Android.
  • Users took to the social media platforms, including Twitter and Reddit today, to report issues with their apps.
  • The company recommends using the desktop interface until issues are resolved.

Today, a number of Android users suddenly saw notifications pop up on their devices saying that apps had stopped running. Important apps such as Gmail and Google Pay are among the apps crashing on Android.

The issue is due to a system component called Android System WebView that lets Android apps display web content, but it has some kind of problem right now that is causing apps to crash.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson said,

“We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users. The affected users are unable to access Gmail. We will provide an update when we expect to resolve the problem.”

Google also acknowledges issues with Gmail on Android on the Google Workspace status page. The company recommends using the desktop interface until issues resolve.

Users took to the social media platforms, including Twitter and Reddit today, to report issues with their apps. When a user reported issues with a Samsung Note 10 phone, the official Samsung US support account suggested removing the WebView update and restarting the phone to resolve the issue. Here are the steps: Go settings > apps > tap the three dots in the top right corner > show system apps > search for Android System WebView > select Uninstall updates.”

Now, this process is universal to all Android phones. So even if you do not have a Samsung phone and use some other brand, you can follow these steps to get rid of the WebView app from your phone.

Some users on Reddit have pointed out that uninstalling updates from the settings menu fixes only some apps. They have suggested uninstalling app updates from the Google Play Store for all apps to work properly. To do this users can head to Play Store, search for Android System WebView, and press the uninstall button. This should uninstall the app’s updates.
