Google Shopping Mobile App to Be Shut Down, Will Only Be Available on Web

Highlights:

  • Google Shopping app is not available on the Play store anymore.
  • The app will work for a couple of months and then will be completely shut down.
  • However, its web version will still be available.

Google has announced to shut down its mobile shopping app for both iOS and Android devices by June this year.

The mobile shopping app will, however, be available on the desktop (web) version. It means that the shopping.google.com website will remain active.

The Google spokesperson said about Google Shopping Mobile App:

“Within the next few weeks, we’ll no longer be supporting the Shopping app. All of the functionality the app offered users is available on the Shopping tab. We’ll continue building features within the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces, including the Google app, that makes it easy for people to discover and shop for the products they love.”

The move comes as Google has been expanding shopping functionality in Search, Image Search, and YouTube, while increasingly leveraging augmented reality, the report mentioned. Google added new features like customer support, price tracking, local store inventory listing, the ability to buy directly from Google, among others.

Google Shopping‘s mobile app and Web version have a similar interface and experience so it can be understood why Google may want to kill the app altogether. The move comes as Google intends to conserve its engineering resources.

The Home feed on Google Shopping provides users with recommended products that it feels they might be interested in. The saved tab shows products that users have added to their wishlist and Notifications tab shows users updates on orders and promotions. Cart tab directs users to start their purchase process.

Some users last week began seeing a ‘Something went wrong’ message on the Shopping app after updating to the latest version of the app.

Overall, Google Shopping does not really need to have an app, as most users just visit Search when looking up products and then can filter results with the “Shopping” tab. This change lets Google conserve engineering resources.
